Detroit Institute of Arts: Artist Talks

Adobe and Architecture with Joanna Keane Lopez

Discover the stories behind Georgia O’Keeffe’s iconic paintings of New Mexico’s adobe architecture in this talk and demonstration with artist Joanna Keane Lopez. Drawing on her own practice as a multidisciplinary artist and educator rooted in the earthen building traditions of the American Southwest, Keane Lopez will share how adobe is made, why it has shaped communities for generations, and how its textures, colors, and forms continue to inspire artists today.

Families and visitors of all ages are invited to explore O’Keeffe’s paintings in Georgia O’Keeffe: Architecture through conversation, close looking, and hands-on experiences that reveal the artistry and cultural significance of adobe construction.
